The Buddy self-sealing DSMB is about as good as it gets, it only gets better by adding a cylinder to it. Taller DSMB's tend to fall over without a lot of weight hanging on them.

Reels, I use Kent Tooling reels as they are indestructible. Made of stainless steel they are heavy but solid.

Yes, You want them facing you. If your octo can be used either way up then it can be mounted either side.

Is there anyone out there that has solo certification? Could you tell me what's involved. I've been a solo diver/snorkler for more than 55 years and only recently become aware of this cert. I might want to pursue it.
Hopefully after 55 years you should know it :)

It is all about self sufficiency. Having a backup for important things like gas. Discussing options of rear or side mounted pony cylinders. Looking at twinsets and Switching between 2nd stages. DSMB's & SMB's. Knives and knife locations. Dive planning and who to inform. Spare mask? Weighting options.

I know a good Solo instructor if you need one :)

I don't really have a land camera. I have an old Fuji laying about I haven't touched in years.

I just saw some of underwater cameras have things like auto-colour correction for when you're taking photos underwater.

I'm going to the dive shop today, so I'll have another look at what they have and see what they recommend.

Hello from England

It's one of the difficulties of starting up a community/forum site - getting enough people in one place at the same time to start a conversation and then keeping enough people coming through to keep the conversation going.

I know there's established dive forums like scubaboard, but I was hoping to be able to add something extra, in terms of scuba guides (a lot have been written by users).

We've probably got about 5-6 members that are very dedicated and regular - people like Atlanticscuba, tropicalshark, komodo and Wookie are all really helpful, post on a regular basis and are generally lovely people.

I'm hoping we can build a community like this, so do tell your friends!

I've been working on ways to promote the site - mainly search engine optimisation (trying to get the site to rank in Google) and slowly adding more integration with things like Facebook.

We only launched in November 2008, so we are still quite young, although we are up to a fairly constant 10,000 visitors per month now.

We're certainly not going to fade out. I try and slowly cover the cost of the site with things like Adsense and I don't mind selling banners - but the content will all be non-bias in terms of reviews of dive locations / centres etc.

There are still some things I'd like to perfect, like the gallery. Linking images to specific users I think would be helpful, but it's difficult to find a way that works well and provides people with what they want. I'm kind of experimenting to see what people like and use, to work out what to expand (it's only me that runs, codes, designs and promotes the site).

I'm going to Egypt for another two weeks diving in a few days so I'm thinking about taking the video camera and seriously boosting the amount of video content on the site, as people seem to like video :)

If you're looking for a scuba blog, Steve on http://www.thescubageek.com is a cool guy that blogged about his time living in Roatan and diving.

But do please stick around and tell a friend :)

so they say....in February it had magically changed to 20kg when I reached check in. I left check in and returned wearing extra clothes and pockets stuffed to bursting and tried again. The baggage Nazi tried to tell me I couldn't carry things in my pockets!!
Back to Egypt in July carrying a 3mm instead of a 7mm semi dry suit and my bag weighed only 19kg.
Mental note, only go to really hot places!

The MSD application is actually free to send into the PADI office in a bid to get people trying as many specialties as possible.

Interesting. When I was in the dive shop the guy was basically telling me to buy the best regs I could afford.. I dunno. I just want something that works, safe and can do nitrox with
Most regs out of the box will do 40%. Any reg is fine.

I use Mares Abyss regs, no flow controls yet will supply enough air for anyone. Can be modified for cold water, Yoke/DIN 232/DIN 300B and is solid.

For stage cylinders I like Aqualung Calypso regs which are a tough breath and very unlikely to free-flow.

Komodo, the flow control is supposed to be used exactly what you use it for. High performance regs can freeflow if used as an octopus, rarely if it's in your mouth when you go into the water.

Hi all

I'm a new member on this site but not a new diver by any means. I first learned to dive about 16 years ago with Roundhill Sub Aqua Club in Leicester in the waters of Stoney Cove and have been working as an instructor with BSAC, PADI TDI in the UK and in sunnier climes since.

I've now settled in Cyprus with my own dive centre where we teach diving right up to rebreather and service all kinds of diving equipment.

Its a hard life but somebody has to do it! ;)

Anyway, just wanted to say hello to all http://www.thescubasite.com/images/fbfiles/images/meg_n_twins.jpg
