Hello from Thailand! 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi Guys,

I've recently finished my Divemaster course here on Koh Tao, Thailand and loved every minute!

Looking forward to speaking to fellow divers about diving in and around SE Asia.

Or if you'd like any advise on diving Koh Tao i'd be pleased to help!

Wow congrats! DM is a long-term goal for me.. So you living in Thailand now then? What is the diving like in Koh Tao? I'd really like some info about it, because I haven't got anything on the site about it!

Thankyou! I have returned to England for a couple of months but will be heading back out to Thailand to work as a DM early next year. The diving around Koh Tao is excellent due to the number of dive sites and the variation of skill level required to dive them. Its a great place to do your DM in my opinion! Have you any plans on when or where you might train as a Divemaster?

Hi and welcome CC.

Have you seen the Bull Sharks off of Chumporn Pinnacle yet? I was up there last year diving with Andy Fritz from Koh Samui, we looked for the but couldn;t find any.

You should pop over to the Andaman Sea side, the diving there is much better than Koh Tao side. If you can get up to the Similans and try some would class diving.

DM work in Thailand is not well paid nor an easy life, the best job you could get would be as a guide on a liveaboard, there are loads going to the Similans everyweek. I was offered a job on a liveaboard once but couldn't accept it because of my business interests in the UK.

My question still is: Were they rare at one point there? Or is it just a seasonal thing they come and go?

Hey! since you seem to know lots about Thailand.. here's my question: I'm thinking of doing my Rescue and DM and then IDC in Thailand. I'm saving hard right now. I just need some financial advice.. How much do you recommend savin before actually going to do these courses (course expense + living + flight there)? And is it possible to get a side job in a bar there or smthing to cover some expenses? How much time should i spread these courses over?

Cheers!

The one's I've seen advertised for Thailand are about £2,000 - that is from not qualified to Divemaster including living expenses + food.

Hiya - I'm on a gap year and planning to go to Koh Tao to do my Divemaster and IDC at the end of January - I think I'm going to go with Planet Scuba but does anyone have any advice on dive outfits out there? Once I've done the course I hope to either get a job there or do a bit of travelling around and maybe get work somewhere else like Malaysia...

But I'll be going totally by myself to begin with, so does anyone have any tips about Koh Tao?
Thanks a lot, Tansy

I would imagine its a seasonal thing! A lot of large oceanic animals will migrate depending on food, breeding and nursery grounds.

The Bull sharks come and go apparently, very few get to see them though. My mate Andy has dived there loads and never seen any.

With regards to those intending to do there DM's or whatever, do it where you expect to work not where it is easiest. Completing your DM in Koh Tao will probably allow you to get work in Thailand, if you're lucky. You should get experience where you intend to work.
