Flying After Deco Dive - How Long? 1 Year ago
I'm potentially planning a deco dive (145', 18 min) that would involve a 1.5 hr flight by commercial jet approximately 23 hours afterward. Mix is EAN24 and deco gas is 100% O2. I use VPlanner and completed IANTD Adv Nitrox/Deco.

There would only be one dive and I would not have any dives in the 5 days prior. Only other contributing factor is that there is the potential for some extertion afterwards since we have to walk a couple hundred yards out of the woods w/ doubles.

According to DAN, they recommend "substantially longer than 18 hours" for flying after any deco dive.

My gut feel is I'm okay, but wondering what the more experienced deco divers would think about this?

Or any suggestions on best ways to further minimize risk?

Thanks,
Earthkanu

Hi there,

DISCLAIMER - You have no idea who I am and what I know, and if you follow any of my advice via the internet you must accept that you may die.

Simple answer is 23hrs is plenty. Go ahead and get on the plane.

145' for 18, is a pretty straight forward dive - and if you use 100% and do the Vplanner profile you probably have less nitrogen in your system than after a 100' for 20mins no deco dive all on air...or any other standard recreational dive where the recommended no fly time is 18hrs.

If you want to minimise the risk more then add more time on O2 at 20'. Stay there til your O2 is almost empty...probably around 20 to 30 mins rather than the ~10 that Vplanner will ask for.

Hope that helps; feel free to PM if you want clarification on anything.

Cheers,

Matt.

Possibly the best disclaimer I've ever seen

LOL! I do like that disclaimer, thats good! I'm not a deco diver but i would go with what your training tells you and add a couple of hours extra to play it safe!

I want to use the same disclaimer as Matt.

Most agencies state 24hrs, you can work it out knowing the pressure within the plane. In reality that would work out at 12 hrs for any dive you have completed your deco correctly, for a well hydrated and fit person with no health problems.

Individuals are all different though, hydration etc. can have a big effect.

From people I've spoken to hydration seems to be the #1 external factor of DCI.

A guy working at hurghaga recompression chamber said that 99% of people that go in the chamber was because they were dehydrated/drinking alcohol the night before.
