Your regulator is your lifeline, without it - you'll have a very tough time enjoying the underwater environment for any period of time. Therefore, as you would expect, control over your regular is considered a basic and essential skill. We are going to look quickly at regulator recovery and clearing procedures, which means how to get your regular back in your mouth and make it give you air again, should it come out for any reason.

Finding your regulator if it comes out sometimes isn't as easy as it sounds, you may have other equipment in the way, you may be in a confined space or (hopefully not) in an anxious state, which makes it vital you recover your regulator and get breathing again.

Before we look at regulator recovery procedures, remember the golden rule of scuba diving:

1) Do not hold your breath!

2) Stay calm (this will help you remember to do #1)

Okay, so your regulators come out, no biggie - it happens and a lot of people take their regulator out to do stuff like pull funny faces anyway. So, now you're underwater, with no regulator and your blowing little bubbles because you're not holding your breath, now what?

Regulator Recovery: Sweep Method

How to recover your regulator with the "sweep" method:

1) Learn to the right, this will give you space between your body and your regulator hose

2) Keep your arm straight and move it from in front of you, down past your thigh and behind you, then outwards and towards you. The regulator should be now in front of your arm.

3) Place regulator in mouth

4) Clear regulator of water by either breathing hard into it, or pressing your tongue against the inside and pressing the purge button.

Regulator Recovery: Reach Method

If you're in a little bit of a squeeze or can't find your regulator with the sweep method, try using the "reach" method.

1) Learn to the right, this will give you space between your body and your regulator hose

2) Reach around the your back and with your left hand push your tank up your back a little

3) Use your right hand to reach behind your right shoulder and feel where the regulator hose is attached to the tank

4) Move your hand along the hose for your second stage regulator until it is in your hand.

5) Place regulator in mouth

6) Clear regulator of water by either breathing hard into it, or pressing your tongue against the inside and pressing the purge button.

How easy is that? No need to panic at all.
