The search for Paul Swain, a British national diving in Gozo, Malta [map] who went missing on Monday has been called off.

The diver disappeared while diving the wreck of the i (pictured, left)i, a popular scuba diving attraction in Gozo. Divers from the Armed Forces of Malta's Explosive Ordnance Disposal detachment were drafted in to help the search which also included the Civil Protection Department and several volunteers.

It was concluded that Paul may have ventured into an unstable part of the wreck. The Armed Forces of Malta commented; "Due to the amount of loose debris currently present in the wreck it was concluded that the chamber where the missing diver went into last was unsafe for rescuers and divers alike. The search was therefore suspended,"

Brett Swain, Paul's brother, told reporters that he was grateful for everyone involved in the search.
