World renowned free-diver Craig Clasen found himself almost had more bit off than he could handle when he tangled with a 12 foot Tiger Shark, saving his friend Ryan McInnis in the Gulf of Mexico.
Craig was hunting yellow finned tuna with fellow fisherman Cameron Kirkconnell, photographer D.J Struntz and filmmaker Ryan McInnis when the shark appeared. The divers had just about finished and were preparing to leave the deep waters south of the Mississippi River's mouth, when filmmaker Ryan was seperated and in the company of a massive tiger shark who began to circle. Craig, who was not keen to kill the shark, took his spear gun and positioned himself between Ryan and the circling predator, hoping it would pass on by. Unfortunately, the shark's circling became tighter and more aggressive. The shark made a roll and looked like it was going to charge us so I just went ahead and put a shaft through its gills. Down in my core I really felt the shark was there to feed. I didn’t want it to come to that." ~Craig Clasen The ordeal lasted 2 hours, with Craig shooting the tiger shark seven times with his speargun, before moving in to kill the injured predator with a long-blade knife. Craig said: "Once I shot it in the gills I felt a moral obligation to finish the job." While some people condemn the killing of the shark, experts have commented saying that tiger sharks only normally enter rivers when they are having trouble finding enough food.
