TOPIC: Underwater camera!

Underwater camera! 3 years, 2 months ago #177

OK i want to get a underwater camera for Christmas and as i ask this everywhere, anyone have any recommendations? Ones not to go with, ones to go with? I wanted to use it on land as well so one that works good in both would be great! At the mo i am looking at Intova cps ic800, Sealife DC800 and Sea & Sea DX 1G. Anyone have any experience with any of these? Thanks

Hi, my husband and i have a fuji finepix F10. Quite simple to use and works well both on land and in the water. We've had it it while now and it's been a bit abused (i'm a bit clumsy) and it still works as well as the day we bought it. The housing for it is really sturdy - i did a shore dive a few years ago and it was quite choppy when we surfaced and got out the water, the camera and ourselves got a bit of bashing on the rocks and the housing came out better than we did, no chips or cracks!
Hope this helps!

I don't have direct experience, but have heard good things about the Sea & Sea DX-1G and Sealife DC800. Go with the DX-1G if your budget allows otherwise the DC800. They both have some features that help take better UW images and are great on land too.

Its going to be my first underwater camera so i dont want to go to crazy with how much it costs! Especially as camera seem to improve on a monthly bases! I might go with the sealife on as i have seen photos and video from it and it looks good!

Why not start out with a disposable under-water camera? See if you really like it and then decide. Camera's are expensive and underwater ones are high.

I always look at amazon for most of my purchases and read all the reviews. A lot of people put reviews on the website.

I had a Fuji f31 for about a year before I bought the underwater housing to go with it. Unfortunately I left my camera outside in the rain over night without the waterproof housing and it died

I managed to get a second hand fuji f30 which fits inside the same housing. I've only used it once at stoney cove but it was good. I could have done with another pair of hands though!

I have a Canon 20D with and Ikelite houseing and strobe. I love it. I want to upgrade to the new Canon 5D Mark II it will do stills and video but my current Ikelite housing will only work for the 20D. So I will have to get a new housing when I get the new camera. but the images are well worth the money I have invested

You can use Nikonos amphibious camera. All amphibious cameras tend to be smaller and lighter than housed land cameras. Further it is much easier to sell an amphibious camera than a land camera in a housing

Re:Underwater camera! 3 years, 1 month ago #504

Where can I buy an affordable amphibious water camera? Should I consider the diving conditions?

Re:Underwater camera! 3 years, 1 month ago #509

Where are you located cause i no the intova is going for about £200 in the UK at the mo and its meant to be a decent camera!

I have been using cheep housings for years,Currently I am using a 4 year old Sony P150 with housing.

When looking at a camera you have a few things to consider

1. Use - If it is just an underwater camera, how much use are you going to get from it.

2. Space - if you are travelling abroad, size and weight become an issue.

3. Cost - do you want to take a Really expensive camera underwater, if the case does flood, it could be a big loss.

4. Light - You can have the greatest camera in the world, but you need a good flash - if you have an option get an external.

5. Speed - you don't want your camera to stop and think for a few seconds after you press the shutter - most things you shoot will me moving, and you may well be as well - so it has to be quick to get the image you want.

6. Depth - if you don't ever dive below 20m, do you need a camera that will go to 60?

Using the internal flash on my sony has had some good results, but the further you get, the more blue it becomes. My case is rated to go to 40m, though it's ok to 50m.

Should show you some expamples. I am looking to upgrade my compact camera soon (I have a nikon D200, that I won't be taking diving, to big and to expensive)and will be making sure there is a cheep housing for whatever I get. Sony are pretty good for housings, don't really know about anyone else right now.

[img] i'm using a ikalite case for a sony point and shoot camera. the case with cost at least 300$ but it is well worth it. its been dropped, on acident, and bee dragged over the rocks as i'm coming up from the bottom, i have it one one of those strechy cords, and it still works great and looks great! you then can upgrade it by buying a handle for a flash that can be used for about any ikalite housing out there. also, make sure that you get a housing that can hold multiple different cameras. I would really recomend the ikalite if you are planning on doing some good photgraphy. i've had problems in the past with the sealife, an older modle, but if it is within your budget to get a sealife, go for it. i took this picture with it, the one at the top. if you want to see some more pictures of what the camera can do, just post something on my profile.
