TOPIC: BBC 2 Series Oceans

BBC 2 Series Oceans 3 years, 6 months ago #83

Has anybody been watching the BBC 2 Series, Oceans? I caught the first episode last Thursday and I was a little disappointed, I don't know what I was expecting, just a little more I guess.

I hope this Thursday's episode is a little better :/ If you haven't seen it, you can watch it on iPlayer here.

I was quite excited when i first heard about the Oceans programme but when i read the write up for the first episode i didn't bother watching it.
I've seen loads of programmes about big, dangerous, deep dwelling weird and wonderful creatures in the sea and i don't doubt Oceans is going to be a good series - but where are all the programmes about the smaller inhabitants of the sea? Or about the coral reefs thats a bit more indepth than a few shots of the reef and more common creatures and divers?
I'm sure if non-divers were asked to name what creatures are in the sea they'd all be able to name sharks, whales, dolphins and sqiuds - but there's so much more than that!!
Maybe Oceans will have a decent reef episode later in the series??

Oops - sounded a bit like a rant!!

I admit, I didn't end up watching the second episode. I'm hoping to get around to it this weekend. I agree, they seemed to focus more on the diver reactions and general waffle than actually diving, sea and critters.

I've been watching it and i met Paul Rose on Monday. I don't think it is meant to be a documentary show i think it is meant to be showing the world the state of the oceans and making everyone aware of the human impact that is going on. Thats why they focus a little bit on the reactions because of the state of the oceans they cant really do a before and after, its just the after! If that makes sense.

Yea it does. That's amazing, where did you meet Paul? What's he like?

He came down to uni to do a talk, so i met him after. He is very down to earth and seems to be a decent guy!

That clip is from a show called Earth, with Ian Stewart. Discovery had a part in making Oceans so it is going to be available outside of the UK later in the year.

I caught the Red Sea and Indian ocean episodes and was so pleased it highlighted the coral problems, was just the thing i was hoping the programe would be about - highlights the problems the coral has and whats been done to prevent it all dying out.
And i loved the underwater garage!

Looks like a spectacular special feature, I might have seen part of it before. Would be nice to watch again.
