It depends on where you are and what you do. DM's get paid very little, even in the UK. Minimum wage doesn't exist when it comes to diving. A DM locally may earn a max of £50 a day, which when you work out as an hourly rate underwater is quite good but it'll take all day to do an hour or 2 underwater.
Instructors will either be freelance, earning what they charge or on a fixed rate from a centre, maybe £100 a day, a long day. If you're working for a dive centre you will get a retainer, usually minimum wage to work in the shop, and so much per course you teach.
If you work abroad somewhere like Thailand as a DM you may be lucky and earn enough for food & drink. £2 per person on an escorted dive, 4 people max, 2 dives a day so £16 a day but that be every day. As an instructor you may earn a living.
The only way to get rich is to become a commercial Saturation diver. Once qualified and experienced, you can get £1000 per day but work is scarce as there are so many people trying to do it.
Diving is not a career - it is a lifestyle.
