Hi everyone,
I was in Marsa Alam diving with my husband last week 3rd March - 11th March) and things didnt quite go to plan!
The 1st few days of the trip were amazing, the diving around Marsa Alam was excellent. The coral was the most pristine we've ever seen, and the reefs were bursting with life. Absolutely stunning!
But following a dive on Sat 7th, I surfaced feeling unusually dizzy, that night I still felt dizzy, but we put it down to the heat or something Id eaten.
Then we were up at 6am on Sun 8th to go to Dolphin House reef, I still felt dizzy but not that bad. From our hotel it was an hour by car and then an hour by boat to the dive site.
I did the 1st dive at Dolphin house reef - which was fantastic! Sandy bottom with huge pinnacles, beautiful corals, plenty of life. It was lovely. But when I surfaced I felt very dizzy & very nauseous. After I took my dive kit off I went and lay on the upper deck, I felt so bad I couldn’t lift my head. The dive master from Coraya divers said he thought I had sea sickness, the journey over was a tad rough but I've experienced far worse. No one suspected it had anything to do with diving, and I wasnt offered oxygen or any form of 1st aid. Sunday night & nearly all of Monday were spent lying in bed feeling awful. By Monday morning I had developed blurred vision, pains in my abdomen & jaw. A burning sensation in my legs and the dizziness was very strong, as was the nausea. Monday evening I went to the hotel doctor. He immediately suspected decompression sickness. I said that was impossible as I hadn’t done anything wrong on my dive. I was at 16 metres ,had carried out a safety stop & I didn’t come up too quickly, I couldnt think of anything I'd done wrong!
He put me on a drip and called an ambulance. So 2 1/2 hours later at 11:45pm I arrive at El Gouna hospital and was taken straight into the decompression ward. The specialist examined me, then after 40 minutes of oxygen and another drip he re-examined me, he diagnosed DCI and told me Id have to spend time in the recompression chamber! I had to spend 5 hours in there!! The 1st 3hrs or so went by pretty quickly as I was so dizzy and disorientated I didn’t really notice time, but the last 2 odd hours dragged in! I got out around 6am - I was exhausted! I then had to spend another night in hospital - luckily they allowed my husband to stay too. We were given a nice private ward, I was surprised by the standard of the hospital it was cleaner than some of the places over here! I was discharged at 10am on Wednesday morning, and my flight home was at 19:35 that evening.
The doctors aren’t sure why I got deco sickness and said some people are more susceptible to it than others, an underlying heart condition can also cause it. I have low blood pressure and this combined with a bit of dehydration could have been the cause. I am going to have an echo scan done to check that out as I don’t want to give up diving but if I have a hole the heart I guess I'll have too.
Since I got home I’ve been feeling really dizzy, I went to see NI's hyberbar specialist on Monday and he told me the dizziness was being caused by some small swelling on my brain and spinal cord and would resolve itself. Thankfully I’m feeling much better now. The specialist also said I wont have any long term effects which was a huge relief!
I thought I'd share this with you guys - not to scare you but just to raise awareness - and to especially raise awareness that if someone feels ill following a dive you should assume the worse and administer oxygen. I cant help thinking had I been given oxygen after surfacing from the dive my condition may not have got so bad - and I would have been treated for DCI sooner.

Wow.

Thanks for sharing that with us. I was aware that some people get DCI easier than others, but it does sound as if you were ridiclously well within the RPD limits! Never heard a similiar story myself.

I think it does go to show if you suspect DCI, get it sorted as quickly as possible and make sure you've got your DAN membership!

Really glad to hear you're okay and no long term effects though!

I'm so sorry to hear you had a hard time! What company did you go with?

I was with Coraya divers
I had a few problems and had actually refused to get in the water on my 1st dive with them. Im an advanced OW diver and Ive only done like 20 dives so Im not very experienced at all. They didnt give us our equipment until we were at the jetty ready to jump in - my reg kept free flowing and my bcd inflated completely on one side 1st then the other side slowly inflated. I insisted they give me new equipment but they said oh too late we've left the dive centre and insisted I carry on with the dive! The dive centre was like a 5 minute walk away! I refused to continue with the dive and they basically made a prick out of me saying I was holding up all the other divers because I was complaining about a stupid little problem!! I did the dive in the end because they made me feel stupid! During the dive I signalled (as requested) to the divemaster I was down to 100 bar, he said ok and continued - we had agreed that when we got to 100 bar we would swim back along the reef towards our entry point. Anyway he carried on and when I got to 70 I told him again, same thing he said ok and carried on. We were going through small caves and canyons and I was down to 40! I kept telling him I had low air then when I got to 20 I grabbed him and waved my air gage in his face. He panicked, gave me his spare reg and practically dragged me back along the reef. When we got out he totally blamed me and said you never told me when you got to 100 bar! I argued with him, as did my husband but we werent getting anywhere! When I said my air went down twice as fast because the reg was leaking he kept ignoring me! I basically refused to do anymore dives with them but my husband insisted we'd be fine it was just that one diving instructor who was a knob the rest seemed fine. I feel stupid now for carrying on with them as I didnt trust them from the start. After a few dives I got speaking to other very experienced divers they said they didnt find them very professional either. We are also totally convinced they were messing with their air mixes - everyone was surfacing feeling really dizzy and tired and nearly all the staff would be asking oh do you feel dizzy and tired you should defo use nitrox - they really really pushed the nitrox course!

Yeah that is probably so they get the money to train you for it! Its good that your instincts kicked up, next time i would go with you instincts as they seemed to be spot on! I would have stopped and gone with a different company, no matter how much it cost me or the problems it caused! That is not a good situation to be in, your DCI could have been much worse from the sound of things!

So your story inspired me to have a guide to decompression sickness / illness on the site. I don't think I missed anything. Give it the once over for me, from personal experience!

Yip you've covered everything there
I had the neurological version - my friends say this means I am officially an air head!

I posted my story on Trip advisor on the Marsa Alam forum and it scared a few people I added this to reassure them!

Decompression sickness is a relatively uncommon disorder among divers. Divers Alert Network (DAN), a worldwide organization devoted to safe-diving research and promotion, estimates that less than 1 percent of all divers experience the condition. A study conducted on Okinawa (an island in the Pacific Ocean near Japan) of military personnel who make tens of thousands of dives each year, found an average of one case of decompression sickness for every 7,400 divers and one death for every 76,900 dives.

Sounds like that dive instructor treated you really badly! What an idiot - a dangerous idiot at that! Did you report him to anyone? He is the kind of man who could cause a serious problem at some stage to some poor person! I'm outraged on your behalf at the way he treated you! I'm sure people would think its best to go with your instincts but its not so easy when you are made to feel stupid and pressure is put on you.

I got the results of my brain scan last week - all clear and good to see I do have a brain!!:silly:No spinal cord damage either - there was concern the bubbles had damaged my nerves - buts its all good!
Getting the results of my heart scan any day now - fingers crossed!!!!!
If I get the al clear we are hopefully heading to Mexico in March & back to Oz in September!!

I'll let you all know when I get the results!

Congratz, hope you have a good time in Mexico. I'm sure you will be fine, you now know to trust your instincts. If it doesn't feel right or you are not confident in the kit you are given, dig your heels in. You could alway look at getting your own kit.. Make sure you come tell us how you get on when you get back

Happy diving
