Nice pics and vid Komodo.

Unfortunately I think the only way to reduce back scatter in low viz is to use strobes. You can try shooting without a flash and allowing the camera to compensate, but you may get more blurry or grainy images (depending on camera and conditions). Fish eye lenses can let more light in and allow you to get closer to your subject.

Glad to see you are getting on well with photoshop. You did quite well getting the back scatter in that last pic

Thanks Wookie for the encouragement and advice.

Now I’m looking forward to my next photo dive.

I can’t find the cash this year for a strobe but next year I will invest in one. I think it’s the only way to go.

Nice pics. I'm off to Egypt again in April, Northern Wrecks special including the Brothers liveaboard. Will take my wide angle lens and one strobe, won't need 2 for that trip.

If you can take a pic without needing to adjust it afterwards then that is the best way to go. Combining filters and manual white balance works well in bright conditions, not so good in the UK except very shallow unless you have a big wide angle lens or DSLR with a big lens.

If there is crap in the water using a strobe will increase backscatter, if you have a very long arm it'll help. I can extend mine to 3'. If you're shooting macro with an external strobe you can play with the strobes position to get different shadow effects. Using a strobe with wide angle only works in good vis or for partially lit shots.

I could demonstrate these with some pics but I'd need to sort through to find some. I have 13,000+ images to look through!

I could go on all night but I'm off out now.

Yes, as soon as I could afford digital I went digital. I now take more pictures than ever. I also like them for taking video clips but you need a filter to do that well.

p.s. If anyone is heading out to Egypt hopefully you are not on Emperor Fraser http://www.emperordivers.com/blog/2009/12/red-sea-liveaboard-emperor-fraser-sinks.html
