TOPIC: What is your scariest dive experience?

Re:What is your scariest dive experience? 2 years, 10 months ago #1296

Several years back while trying to get a dive in before the weather boke, we knew better but figured we could beat the cold front, went down in cloudy conditions and surfaced in 8 to 10 foot seas and high winds and no boat. The boat had drug its anchor and the capt. was trying to weather the high seas and out of sight. He did have have the insight to call the C.G. to notify them he had divers in the water and had lost sight of them. 2 of us where picked up by other boats and 1 by the C.G. helo and 1 by our boat. On another note no one should underestimate sharks. Dont fear them but do not underestimate them. We have bull sharks that will attack if they sense a meal. They are still wild animals and when they feel threatened or hungry they can be dangerous. While spearfishing we have had them make runs on us and had to push them off with our shafts.

Snorkeling in Fiji we came across a reef shark - actually he came over to see us. If it weren't for the fact that my brand new bride was with me and I felt a need to appear manly, I would have run across the surface of the water back to shore.

As it was we just slowly swam back to the boat.

The worst experience that I have ever had was when diving in Mexico I caught the heel strap of my left fin when I was back rolling out of the boat and into the water. As a result I rolled under the boat and was disoriented. When I tried to surface I hit my head on the bottom of the boat which left a smudge of blue on the side of my head. Then once I did surface and get my bearings, my fin slipped off. Other than feeling like a real dip the rest of the dive was OK.

I was diving on Agincourt reef in Oz and I was taking photos of 2 large male cuttlefish trying to impress a little lady cuttlefish, I ws drifting with the current watching them snapping away and I saw something out of the corner of my eye I spun round and there was a huge cuttle fish right in my face he darted back and forth a few times then swam off. That scared me! Ive seen quite a few sharks and they didnt phase me at all - I love sharks! One other time in the Maldives I saw a massive pod of dolphins, we had just finished a dive and so grabbed our snorkels and swam over to them, they had babies and the males didnt want us getting too close, when they swam towards us and around us it was scary! they were so powerful, you could feel their power as they swam past. One tail smack from those boys and your dead! So I left the 'cute' dolphins to it and got back on the boat!
Give me sharks any day over cuttlefish and dolphins!!!!
