This came up in a previous thread and it was a bit of a hot potato subject.

I've opened up a poll on whether solo diving is a good idea and this thread for further discussion.

I'm all for free choice and I think if trained properley solo diving can have acceptable safety levels, so I voted yes, but it would be good to have a specialist certification.

I don't seem to be able to vote, but not sure what I'd vote for either way. I do think that the general rule of buddy diving is a good idea, but I do believe their is exceptions to this rule. You definitely need lots of experience and training to go solo along with the required back up kit. Of course you always need the appropriate surface support too.
