TOPIC: dive computers: veo 180 or Suunto Gekko?

dive computers: veo 180 or Suunto Gekko? 2 years, 2 months ago #1845

I'm buying my first computer and I'm looking at the Veo 180 or the Gekko. I can get the 180 for about $200 and the Gekko for about $250. Which would be better?

Thank you.

I couldn't comment on the Veo 180, as I've never used one. I do however own a Suunto Gekko.

For me at least I find the Suunto very easy to use and read. It's my first dive computer and I've dived with it about 30 times.

It saw me through my AOW and Nitrox course (the Gekko lets you use Nitrox mix as well). The best thing for me is the screen is nice and big, it does everything pretty much for you.

The only downsides: there is no backlight, so during a night dive you need to stick your torch on it to charge the luminous back - although this is satisfactory. Also note, if you want to download to a computer, they don't come with the attachments to do so - they're extra.

Suuntos from what I hear also tend to be very conservative and allows you to put in your current fitness level, so it can adjust your limitations.

In all, I'm very happy with it and I would recommend it as a starter dive computer. I'd have a look at both and see what you want out of a dive computer, as it's you that's going to have to dive with it.

My mrs has the gecko and can't be happier with it.

I got the vyper and there is not much in it. We've done night dives with them and she had no issues with the glo rather than the back light. I just got the vyper for the PC connection.

Can't really comment on the veo...
