TOPIC: What computer does everyone use?

What computer does everyone use? 2 years, 5 months ago #1957

I have noted a few more experienced divers so i thought i would post this: What dive computers does everyone use?

I have been looking at getting one for a while know and i'm really stuck on getting a basic one such as the Uwatec or uwatec aladin prime or going for something far more complex. So thought I would get everyones opinions of their computers lol. I found i'm missing load of info for my log book when i dont use a computer so need to get my decision together lol.

I have the Sunnto Vyper, found it good and it's nice to be able to upload the logs to the PC (the cable is a more £s than it should be IMO, but most seem to be). The display is nice and clear, with a good back light. The menu is easy enough to operate once you get use to it. The gecko is very simular but without the upload capability and it glos rather than having a back light (this isn't a huge problem though)

I'm a Gekko user. Basically the same as the Vyper from the sounds of it.

Nitrox / Air / RGBM - so all good for me.

I use the Sunnto Viper2. It was recommended to me and I am very happy with it. Check the Sunnto web site for the specs and you will be able to pick one that’s best for you. I real like Sunnto computers.

If you can spend a little more look for Viper Air.

Yeah Suunto has to be the best on the market. I having been wanting to get the Vyper 2, but feel really guilty about the money being spend out. Hence why i was looking at something a bit more basic, and i know the Uwatec digital timer is good, as i used it through all my training. Also cheap lol.

Personnaly I like the UWATEC SMART Z. I have been using it for several years now and it has worked great. I also like the idea of one less hose off my reg.

I looked at the smart pro not so long ago, not sure if that just a different name for it lol! Does the computer still work if you don't use the transmitter?

My smart pro was/is three years old and has just died on me, it apparently requires a circuitboard to be replaced (it is literally dead).
My wife's smart pro at the same time, on the same trip, has had a circuit board problem as well as display problem - hers is/was two years old.

Both were serviced by Scubapro once a year, both were serviced last February then had a problem in August (we had gone diving twice in the intervening period doing probably 30 or so dives), sent back to Scubapro in the UK, in September - the problems were not resolved at all, got them back in time for a diving trip in December with exactly the same problem as when we sent them to Scubapro. and they have just told us it isnt worth fixing them rather upgrade..... not too happy!

I have been using my Smart Z for about 5 years now and before that owned another Uwatec that operated flawlessly. When I sent the first one in for battery replacement I was told by Uwatec that they had problems with them sealing after battery replacement so they upgraded for a small fee to the Smart Z. To answer your other question It can be used without the transducer but you wont have certain functions such as time left on dive, tank pressure among other things. I have used it to depths of 150 feet with no problems. And feel very confident using it.
